One of the least prolific of composers, Paul Dukas wrote one work that brought him lasting fame: 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice,' thanks to Mickey Mouse's star turn in FANTASIA in addition to the work's own pictorial merits. Beyond this orchestral showpiece, the few works that the highly self-critical Dukas allowed to see the light of day (he destroyed many more) are all colorful and brilliantly crafted, deserving the attention of anyone with a taste for Dukas' impressionist contemporaries.This disc puts 'Sorcerer' in the context of Dukas' other major orchestral scores. The warhorse itself gets a spirited romp, with Jesￃﾺs Lￃﾳpez-Cobos and the Cincinnati Symphony finding just the right "Once upon a time..." atmosphere for the opening. The other works fare well too. 'La Pￃﾩri' is a lush, glittering ballet score that bears comparison to Debussy's 'Jeux' for refinement of timbre and to Ravel's 'Daphnis et Chloￃﾩ' for sensuous abandon. The earlier Symphony in C is more in the classical tradition, sometimes reminiscent of Cￃﾩsar Franck's essay in that form, and boasting a singularly lovely central Andante between its exuberant outer movements. The performances throughout are sensitive to the originality of Dukas' orchestrations and to the sheer verve of his inspiration.REVIEWS:Fanfare (1-2/00, p.242) - "...spectacular...sonics capturing the Cincinnati band at the top of its bent rate a qualified recommendation.
